Property tax bills are mailed to the owner of record. New owners should contact their title company or review their closing statement to determine who is responsible for paying the taxes. Payment of property tax depends on when the property is transferred. Unpaid taxes continue to accrue against the property. Deed person responsible for paying taxes.

Q: What time of year are property taxes due?
Taxes are due and payable from October 1 through the last day of February without interest.

 

Q: What is the tax rate for Sevier County?                                                                               

The Property Tax rate is set annually by the Sevier County Board of Commissioners.  For 2020, the tax rate is $1.48 for every $100 of assessed value.

Q: Are partial payments accepted for my taxes?                                                                     

Yes, the Trustee's Office does accept partial payments on taxes. The remaining balance left unpaid, when the taxes become delinquent, are assessed interest.

Q: What happens if I miss the tax payment deadline?

From the first day of each month beginning March 1st , interest of 1.5 percent per month (18 percent annually) is added to your base tax amount. If the Post Office fails to postmark your payment by the date due, it is considered a late payment. This applies even if you mail your payment on time. For mail-in payments, office meter dates are not accepted. Online property tax payments are recognized by the county as paid on the date of the online transaction.

The taxes that become payable October 1 cover the current calendar year.

 

Q: Where can my tax bill be paid in person?

For you safety and convenience we now offer a Drop Box for tax payments. This Drop Box is located behind the courthouse on Commerce St. The Trustee's office is located on the second floor of the Sevier County Courthouse in downtown Sevierville. We are the first office on the right when you enter the west-end of the courthouse.  Our office hours are Monday through Friday 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.

Q: Does my mortgage company get a copy of my tax bill mailed to them? 

No, It is the property owner's responsibility to forward tax bills to their mortgage company.

Q: What does the term "EtUx" beside my husband's name on the property bill mean?
EtUx is a Latin phrase meaning "and wife." The phrase "EtVir" means "and husband," EtAl means "and others."

 

Q: Do you sell my property if the taxes are not paid?                                                         

Unpaid taxes are turned over to Chancery Court where they become subject to additional costs and tax sale. Tax will be payable through this office(with additional interest) through March of the following year.
